Set up at Stamford Strings with Pirastro Perpetual Strings, a Wittner Tailpiece, ebony pegs and a hand carved despair bridge.
This lovely cello has a mature sound to match its twenty four years and the varnish has gently aged. A smaller Strad model with a big sound. Would suit an advanced student progressing to study at Conservatoire level, a serious amateur or a young professional. This cello is looking for its second home, and it will wait for the right person.

about the maker
As with most of the instruments that Stamford Strings sells, there is a strong connection between the maker and the owner of the business, Libby Summers. Tony Padday taught Libby Summers Cello Making at Newark School of Violin Making and Tony has been a kind of mentor to Libby in the early days of her business. She has a great respect for him and the whole family have become friends.
The partnership of Louise and Tony Padday was literally formed at the workbench at the Violin making School at Newark where they met. Since graduating in 1984, they have continually refined the character of their instruments, each subtly different, yet each an integration of design and material.
The choice of superior materials is the first essential and the selection of wood for each instrument is governed by the tonal quality needed by the player, and the overall envisaged design. The Paddays prefer to construct from one-piece backs and the fine Maple and Alpine Spruce are selected for the character of the grain and quality of figure. They make the varnishes themselves, from traditional gums, oils and natural pigments. When choosing the colour, a judgement is made for the particular wood in question and great care is taken not only to protect, but to enhance the maximum resonance of each instrument.
