A German Violin, Markneukirchen

German Violin, Markneukirchen, c. 1880 - 1900

£6,500

This attractive violin is attributed to the celebrated Markneukirchen school of violin making in Saxony, Germany, and is believed to date from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.

Constructed with a handsome one-piece, well-flamed maple back, matching figured ribs and neck, and a finely grained spruce table beneath a warm golden-amber varnish, the instrument displays many of the characteristics associated with the better-quality violins produced in the Vogtland region during the golden age of German violin making. Its' elegant outline, well-executed scroll, and carefully selected tonewoods reflect the high standard achieved by the finest workshops of the period.

The violin has been reconditioned in our workshop in Stamford, with a brand new set up, including a new nut, new pegs, new bridge and sound post. It has been set up with Pirastro Perpetual strings.

The Markneukirchen Tradition

For more than three centuries, the small Saxon town of Markneukirchen has been one of the world's great centres of violin making. The tradition began in the seventeenth century when Protestant craftsmen fleeing religious persecution in neighbouring Bohemia settled in the Vogtland region, bringing with them the skills of instrument making. In 1677, the violin makers established a formal guild, laying the foundations for what would become one of Europe's most important centres for stringed instruments.

During the nineteenth century, Markneukirchen evolved into the heart of an extraordinary network of highly skilled specialist craftsmen. Rather than being produced in large factories in the modern sense, many instruments were created through a cooperative workshop system in which individual makers specialised in carving scrolls, preparing ribs, graduating plates, varnishing, or final assembly. This division of labour allowed workshops to produce instruments across every level of quality—from affordable student violins to finely crafted professional instruments—while preserving a remarkable standard of craftsmanship.

By the turn of the twentieth century, Markneukirchen had earned an international reputation for excellence. Instruments from the region were exported throughout Europe, Britain, and North America, and many distinguished violin-making families, including Heberlein, Roth, Hamm and others, established reputations that continue to be respected today. The establishment of the State School of Instrument Making in 1892 further strengthened the area's commitment to traditional craftsmanship and technical excellence.

Today, the finest Markneukirchen instruments are increasingly appreciated not simply as "trade violins," but as examples of a remarkable regional craft tradition that combined exceptional woodworking skills with practical innovation. Well-preserved examples offer excellent tonal qualities, attractive materials, and represent outstanding value among European antique violins.
